Apple is all set to launch its first Macs powered by its in-house processors, but the company is apparently having trouble convincing major app makers to support its new platform. That’s according to a new report from 9to5Mac, which claims that companies like Facebook, Google and Candy Crush developer, King, will not be available on Apple Silicon Macs at launch.

As per the report, Facebook is one of the major companies to have refused to make its iOS apps available on iMacs powered by Apple Silicon. That being the case, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger will not get native support on the new platform, while Google will also not release Gmail, Google Maps and Google Drive apps on the new device. Likewise, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and Snapchat will also miss native support at launch.

It is worth noting that all iOS and iPadOS apps will, in theory, be compatible with the upcoming iMacs. The App Store will reportedly designate such apps with a message reading: “Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS”. If an app is not compatible with Apple Silicon Macs, the App Store will show a message telling the user to download in on their iPhone or iPad instead. Of course, all developers can choose to republish their apps with Mac support at any time, which means the lack of native Facebook and Google apps on the platform could be temporary.

Apple is all set to unveil its first Apple Silicon Macs at its 'One More Thing' virtual event later today. The launch would mark Apple’s transition from Intel chips to its own in-house silicon almost two decades after the company ditched its in-house PowerPC chips that used to power its PowerMac models in the early years of this millennium.

Cloudflare, one of the premier content delivery networks (CDNs) in the world, also provides the whole gamut of cloud-based solutions for website owners and network administrators. The list includes distributed DNS service, free DDoS Protection, reverse proxies, automatic caching and SSL offloading. Now, the San Francisco-based company is adding one more product to that list – consumer DNS service.

The announcement may have come on April Fools’ Day, but Cloudflare is dead serious about it. The DNS resolution service, 1.1.1.1, aims to prevent ISPs from tracking users’ web history, and promises to help websites load faster. The company claims it will be “the Internet's fastest, privacy-first consumer DNS service”.

According to Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince, “If you switch to 1.1.1.1, then that ledger of where you’re going online is not being kept by your ISP”. With its focus firmly on privacy, Cloudflare is also promising not to use that data itself, and instead, will wipe all logs of DNS queries within 24 hours. He further claims that the company won’t even write any of the source IPs on their disks to completely mitigate all risks of data breaches going forward.

“We're committing to, and actually having a third party come in and audit the fact that we're destroying all of the logs within 24 hours, we're never writing any of the source IP addresses to disk, and that's the only personal identifiable information that would be there”

For the uninitiated, Domain Name System (DNS) resolver services are generally provided by internet service providers (ISPs) to transform a domain name like beebom.com into an IP address that routers and switches understand. Because DNS is essentially the how client computers connect to servers, DNS service providers typically have access to a whole lot of information about users’ online behavior based on their search queries.

To avoid ISPs spying on their activities, most tech-savvy users generally configure their routers or PCs to use either Open DNS (208.67.222.222 / 208.67.220.220 for IPV4) or Google DNS (8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 for IPv4), both of which are typically faster than the default DNS resolver provided by ISPs. It will be interesting to see how Cloudflare competes with these two established players going forward.

Do you feel uncomfortable or stressed out having a lot of icons and shortcuts on your desktop? You’re probably not alone. In fact, there are a lot of ASD and ADHD patients across the globe who feel overwhelmed by this conventional approach followed by operating systems to flood information you might not need at the moment. Well, Jason Jason Yuan, an ex-Apple interaction designer has designed a concept called Mercury O S that attempts to overcome these shortcomings.

“Mercury is designed, first and foremost, to be an experience inclusive of people with limited executive function and cognitive load. It re-imagines the operating system as a fluid experience driven by human intent.”, says Jason Yuan, creator of Mercury OS.

According to Jason, Mercury OS is designed to be humane, fluid, focused, and familiar. Let’s take a look at how Mercury OS aims to achieve these principles.

First up, there are no apps or folders like you see on every other operating system in Mercury OS. Instead, the operating system offers you content and actions in the form of Modules.

First up, there are no apps or folders like you see on every other operating system in Mercury OS. Instead, the operating system offers you content and actions in the form of Modules.

Modules are created based on an amalgamation of nouns, verbs, and modifiers. Here, nouns represent items, verbs define actions. The modules are created using natural voice and text input methods. Yuan analogizes this concept as “browsers capable of generating UI on-demand”.

Notably, the modules can be redefined at any time from the action bar that Jason calls Locus. Locus comes with the combined benefits of a traditional command-line interface and natural language processing.

To ensure continuity, the operating system lets you create new modules by simply tapping on the ‘+’ button or by pressing the Tab key. This way, you will not lose focus on what you are currently working on.

These flows are complemented with “Spaces” created to scale through multiple modules. Spaces are accessible with a simple swipe up gesture where you gain access to something similar to the Windows 10 Timeline.

You probably are unaware of the numerous keyboard shortcuts that Windows 10 offers, especially as they’re not straightforward or difficult to remember. Here is where Jason’s operating system stands apart. You can long-press the Command/ Ctrl key to view all of the available shortcuts. You can also progressively filter and reach the shortcuts as you type.

To wrap it all up, Mercury OS offers Artificial Collaborators aimed at a future without apps. Users can define collaborators to get AI assistants of different services in one place. This would help modules gain functionalities suited for specific use-cases.

Jason initially published plans for how Mercury OS will look and feel like but he now plans to make Mercury OS a reality sometime in 2020. We have to wait to witness if Mercury OS takes off considering how promising and futuristic it appears. So, what is your opinion on Mercury OS? Let us know in the comments.

First shown off at IFA 2018 along with the Kirin 980, Honor has now officially unveiled the much-anticipated ‘Magic 2’ in China. Honor Magic 2 comes with a full-screen display, a sliding mechanism for the front camera, and a total of six cameras. It also has its very own AI voice assistant, at least for the Chinese market.

Price and Availability

The Honor Magic 2 comes in three different configurations and has been priced starting at 3,799 yuan (~ Rs 40,000) for the 6GB+128GB variant. You’ll, however, need to shell out 4,299 yuan (~ Rs 45,000) for the 8GB+128GB variant and 4,799 yuan (~ Rs 51,000) for the 8GB+256GB variant.

The Honor Magic 2 will be available in blue, teal and red – with a gradient added to it, like is the case with most modern phones these days. It will go up for pre-order tomorrow and will be available for purchase starting November 6.

Specs and Features

In an attempt to extend the screen to the edges, phone makers are now going back to the sliding parts. Honor Magic 2 follows the lead of Oppo’s Find X and Xiaomi’s Mi Mix 3 with a manual slider for the selfie cameras, sensors and more.

Cameras

The Magic 2 packs triple cameras on the front and rear to win the award for the most number of image sensors on a phone. The triple cameras on the rear are a 16MP RGB sensor, a 16MP super-wide angle lens, and a 24MP monochrome sensor. As for the front cameras, which are hidden in the slider, Honor has included a 16MP+2MP+2MP setup to give you a total of six cameras.

Backed by the dual-core NPU of the Kirin 980, Honor says the phone is capable of identifying 60+ categories and 1500+ scenes automatically. Honor Magic 2 also supports ultra-wide-angle night mode, which sounds rather exciting!

The sliding mechanism not only holds the front camera but also the company’s 3D Face Recognition technology, which will help unlock the device with just a look. Honor says it has developed the 3D facial recognition in house and it can record tens of thousands of feature points on your face to make it more secure than regular face unlock.

Display and Processor

The Honor Magic 2 sports a 6.39-inch Full-HD+ AMOLED display, with a 1080 x 2340 pixels resolution. It’s said to bring a super high contrast and high color gamut to the table for an enhanced viewing experience. There’s an optical under-display fingerprint scanner here, which is 32.48 square millimeter in size.

As one would’ve expected, the Honor Magic 2 is powered by its parent Huawei’s in-house Kirin 980 chipset, coupled with Mali G-76 GPU, up to 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage. There’s also a 3,400mAh battery in tow, which supports super-fast 40W charging.

With the release of this flagship device, Honor has followed the lead of its Chinese rivals and today debuted its own AI voice assistant ‘YOYO’ at the launch event. It’s part of the company’s updated Magic UI 2.0 ecosystem for China.

Honor Magic 2 runs Android 9.0 out-of-the-box, with the company’s EMUI 9.0 skin on top. As for connectivity options, the device brings along AI-powered dual-frequency GPS navigation, Cat.21 wireless connectivity (speeds up to 1.7Gbps), Bluetooth 5.0, and dual VoLTE among other things.

So, how do you like the Honor Magic 2? Does it seem like a worthy rival to the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3? Let us know your opinions in the comments below.

Microsoft has partnered with fact-checking website NewsGuard to now provide free access to its service for Microsoft Edge users. NewsGuard is available at a $2.95 monthly subscription fee for customers using other web browsers.

NewsGuard was previously integrated into the mobile version of Edge and this agreement brings the same to the recently-launched Edge browser based on Chromium. On top of this, Microsoft’s Bing search engine will now have access to real-time NewsGuard data.

“We are delighted to be able to expand our relationship with Microsoft, which is a leader among companies in taking steps to address the unforeseen, unintended consequences of new technologies,” said NewsGuard co-CEO Gordon Crovitz. “The internet has empowered people around the world with unprecedented access to information, but the internet has also made it easier than ever for misinformation to spread, including health care hoaxes about COVID-19.”

The Redmond giant has sponsored NewsGuard’s news literacy program through which it provides access to more than 700 libraries across seven million users in the United States, Great Britain, France, Germany, and Italy. The program will also be expanded to Australia and Canada later this year.

For the uninitiated, NewsGuard uses trained journalists to review and rate the credibility of news websites and their associated social media handles. Based on apolitical criteria, sites are rated with trust scores ranging from 0 to 100 and are marked with color indicators like Green and Red to denote the trust score.

Apart from all these, other Microsoft departments will be able to use NewsGuard’s ratings and labels in their products and services. This includes projects such as Defending Democracy Program and teams within Microsoft Research working to fight misinformation, disinformation, and healthcare hoaxes.

Apple reportedly working on three new macs reviews, apple reportedly working on three newton s law, apple working practices, apple reportedly working on three new macs with intel, apple reportedly working on three new macs with arm based chipset, apple working environment, apple reportedly working on cars, apple reportedly working on three new macs withdrawal form, apple reportedly working on synonym, apple reportedly working on a groovy.

Apple already designs its own ARM-based custom chips that go into its iPhones and iPads, with the latest A11 Bionic that powers the highly-popular iPhone X said to be the most advanced mobile chipset in the world right now.

Now, if a new Bloomberg report is to be believed, the company could very well be working on at least three new Mac models with integrated ARM-based custom co-processors, although, the primary CPU in all of them is still expected to be from Intel. The rumored lineup will apparently include two MacBooks and one iMac, but it isn’t immediately clear if the upcoming iMac Pro will get the update.

Apple, of course, already uses ARM-based chips in some of its current laptops and desktops, including the MacBook Pro and the iMac Pro. While the former uses the custom T1 chip to handle the Touch ID sensor and the Touch Bar, the latter uses the T2 chip to control the speakers, the internal microphone, the fans, the camera and internal storage.

The T2 also replaces a whole bunch of discrete controllers in the current iMac Pro, including the system management controller, image signal processor, audio controller, and SSD controller. The regular MacBook and iMac models, however, do not feature any custom co-processor.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg is also reporting that the next-gen iPad that is slated to be released later this year, will also “probably” include an “Apple-designed graphics engine and AI chip”, but further details about that device are hard to come by.

Apple has refused to comment on the report, but at least some analysts seem to believe that designing its own chips might give the company a competitive advantage over its rivals. According to Piper Jaffrey senior analyst Mike Olson, designing its own custom chips will not only help Apple reduce component costs, but the in-house R&D will also allow the company to keep secrets away from the likes of Samsung.
